Removing a layer (part of jpg) from graphic.

I have a .jpg graphic that I want parts of it removed. I am new to Gimp, can anyone help/guide me how to do that. Thanks

The trouble is to know what the part you want to remove looks like. And it can sometimes take a while (see Re: how to invert greyscale values only... (Rich Evans)) depending on the complexity of the subject.

Anyway, your question says layer, and i'm surprised since jpgs don't handle layers.
