8 bit png warning / enhancement

Hi,

I wanted to ask if it were possible to add some kind of warning to the png export settings that pngs are only saved as 8 bit png. It is not obvious that saving as (lossless) png causes loss when using Gimp, because the input was 16 bit greyscale and the output ends up with 8 bit greyscale.

I read that there is developement going on to implement 16 bit png, but a warning till then would really help.

Thank you for your time and efforts.

Malte.

This has nothing to do with exporting png files. The conversion happens when you open the file - all images in Gimp are only 8 bits per channel.
