Preventing selections and such from flagging the image as modified

Whenever I click with the selection tool in an image GIMP regards the image as edited. I'm assuming there is a reason for this, but is there any way to turn this feature off?

No. The selection mask is part of the image and if you modify it, then the image is modified and flagged dirty.

No. The selection mask is part of the image and if you modify it, then the image is modified and flagged dirty.
