Urgently need to adjust photograph size
Hello
I really need to adjust a photograph. It needs to be 600 by 600 pixels. When I change one value it seems to automatically adjust itself. I really need to get this done ASAP, so if you can help it would be graitely appreciated.

I think that you have to untick the box that forces one size e.g width) to change the second size (e.g height) to remain proportional. Then you ought to be able to set what ever sizes you like.

Ok, Help is on the way!
1. Open up your picture in Gimp. 2. Then you will go to Image/Scale Image. Type in 600 and 600. Choose the Interpolation of either Cubic or Sinc, press Scale. And your done. Don't forget to save where ever you want your imgae. *However if your image is not at a 1:1 ratio it will look stretched one way or the other.

Hi,
If you really need to have 600 x 600 instead of 600 x "something less than 600", then you will need to set the smaller dimension to 600 and then CROP the image to fit the other dimension.
If it is not acceptable to lose part of the image by cropping, then if you change NON-relatively, you will distort (shrink/expand) one direction of the image. I do not think that is what you want either.

A little more detail might help, but generally if you have loaded it with the GIMP, then first change mode to RGB if not. Image --> Mode --> RGB
Now go to: Image --> Scale Image
and do the small dimension first (probably) and select Scale.
Then go to Image --> Canvas Size
unlink the chain and adjust the other dimension so that it is 4:3 proportion, center as necessary and click to Resize. If you resize an image it tends to get a little soft, so now go to:
Filters --> Enhance --> Sharpen --> about 50 --> and click OK
Then save as new name...

" adjust the other dimension so that it is 4:3 proportion"
but how do I do this please?

I presume that you are using Scale Image. At the right hand side of the boxes where you enter the dimensions there are 2 chain links which are joined together, click on these and they will separate. Now you can enter your dimensions with out any problem.

Its a passport photograph, so doing the little chain things doesn't really
work, as it becomes distorted.
Thats why I was trying to do what the previous poster suggested
Urgently need to adjust photograph size
How large is your photo now(resolution)? Is is a scanned image, or did you take the photo on a digital camera? This info would help us tremendously. If your Image is not at a 1:1 ratio like a 600:600 image is, then you can 1, Distort the aspect ratio or 2, crop off the top/bottom, side(l or r), or some combination of the sides.

==>> here you would probably set the small dimension to 600 - then if you hit tab to another field the big dimension will adjust accordingly - when its right select scale. An SLR is commonly 3:2 proportion and a common digital may already be 4:3 proportion. ==>
Then go to Image --> Canvas Size
unlink the chain and adjust the other dimension so that it is 4:3 proportion, center as necessary and click to Resize.
When you hit Image --> Canvas Size you first break the chain. Then change the big dimension to "800". Move the cursor to the center function and drag the image around if necessary. Then click Resize.
Also to note - if the original image is larger than than the final when you do the enhance you should end up with a decent picture. If "much" smaller and you area actually growing it to 800x600 then you will lose quality noticably.
In the instructions I assumed that you are starting with a big pic.
If you resize an
image it tends to get a little soft, so now go to:Filters --> Enhance --> Sharpen --> about 50 --> and click OK

Then you're probably going to want to crop out a square part of the picture and adjust that.

Ok great. That is critical.
I am going to have you scale it up.
1st You are going to use the scaling method with the chains connected and
making sure to make the Width 600 Wide.
2nd. Use the Rectangle select tool(first button in the toolbox). Your width
is now correct. However your Length will not be. So you will need to crop
off some of the top and bottom. You can select first in the margins on the
left move diagonally downward to the right. You can measue how far you have
gone using the bottom left of your gimp window. There are two numbers there
that you can use for reference. Then you should be done. An image of my
description is here:
http://i337.photobucket.com/albums/n382/steferfootballdude13/example-1.jpg
3rd. Press Image/Crop to Selection.
I hope this solves your problem. Ideally you wold rescan the Image at 600wide or 600 hight and repete my steps. Email back if any questions!

You can't resize a 556x796 image to 600x600 without inducing distortion.
That should be obvious. Resize the image to 600xXXX using the scale image control panel with the width and height chained together. Then crop a 600 x 600 portion of the image.

There is a plug-in called Liquid Rescale which would probably do exactly what you want.

Depending to which nation he is applying for his passport, altering the photograph in that way may be illegal. The two nations for which I hold passports allow only cropping and resizing of the image, even colour adjustment and free rotation is forbidden.
