Can't start program

I have Gimp on Ubuntu 9.04, which was installed only a couple of weeks ago.

I was able to start GIMP when I first installed Ubuntu, however, I just attempted to start it today, and I'm unable.

Everything appears to be trying to load (little wrist watch is there), but the watch vanishes and no program.

I just re-installed GIMP but to no avail.

Can anyone help me get GIMP to start?

Open a terminal (Apps->accessories->Terminal) and type 'gimp' (no quotes) and press enter.

Is there an error message displayed when the window disappears?

start gimp from a konsole window by typing "gimp" and post the resulting messages here. that should provide a clue what's going wrong.
