How to add transparency to half an image

Hi all, I'm new here.

I'm trying to add a transparency to the bottom half of an image, make it lighter so I can emphasize the text on the image.

I keep cropping the image and getting frustrated.

You can use layer masks to achieve this effect. Right click the layer in the layer dialog "add layer mask". a white area is displayed in the layer dialog beside the image. on this area you can paint with any tool. whice color represents fully visibility, black represents full transparency. if you paint in any gray tone it will make the image half transparent.

hope that helps,

How to add transparency to half an image

Okay, that makes sense. And that is what I was trying to do. But how do I separate the image into halves? Top half & bottom half and only add transparency mask to the bottom half?

Thanks

How to add transparency to half an image

I would add a guide using 50% horizontal separating the top and bottom.

Image->Guides->New Guide (by percent)

Then I'd use the rectangle select tool, and snap to the new horizontal guide, and select the bottom half of the image.

Make sure you are editing the layer mask. Now bucket fill the selection with black, and the bottom half of the layer will be transparent so you can see whatever layer is below.

Note that you can use the move tool to move the guide line up and down as necessary.

Only paint the gray on the bottom half of the screen.

Fill the mask with a black to white gradient. That will do the needful for you.

Another approach might be to
-- rectangle select bottom half
-- cut
-- paste as new layer
-- adjust transparency of new layer to (say) 50% -- merge down
