Using GIMP on Netbooks?

Hello!

I just got a Lenovo S10 Netbook, with a 10" screen. The problem is, with such a small-ish screen, I can't see part of the tool windows in GIMP!

If anyone has ideas, I'm listening :)

Plug into a regular monitor when wiorking, w/ a little effort you can keep your tools on the netbook and image on the monitor. You will still be limited in the output resolutions available but they are greater than that provided by the netbook.

Also remember heavy image lifting is not the intended focus of these devices, although they do an admirable job.

see ya

Another thing is that netbooks have poor TFT LCD screens that aren't very good when it comes to color. Graphic design with with a predefined palette might be fine, but I wouldn't touch up photos with a netbook.

As a test I tried running Argyll CMS with my colorimeter on my Asus 1000HE display. It did all but scream in pain.

Using GIMP on Netbooks?

Actually, I was more hoping if there's any way I could modify the toolboxes to make things fit better.

And, yes, I realize that the colors are probably off terribly; it looks fine to me and my girlfriend (the two people who matter to me) so I don't really care.

Anyway, if anyone has any more ideas on making gimp work nicer on a netbook, I'm all ears.

Thanks, Harold Schreckengost

Using GIMP on Netbooks?

Hi,

Anyway, if anyone has any more ideas on making gimp work nicer on a netbook, I'm all ears.
...

By ToolBox, you mean:
http://docs.gimp.org/2.6/en/gimp-concepts-usage.html#gimp-concepts-toolbox

I take it dragging the corners or the side to make it narrow didn't help.

Items can be removed from the ToolBox via Windows > Dockable Dialogs > Tools.

Since space is at a premium, you might want to remove Wilbur ((toolbox-wilber no)) on the ToolBox. Akkana Peck has a tip on her site. See: http://gimpbook.com/tips.html

Is it possible to work without the actual ToolBox? I think most of the items can be accessed via the Image window under Tools.

Just some thoughts. HTH

Using GIMP on Netbooks?

Would be great (as I said in some fewer posts) to get rid of the empty image window on startup.

(like the old gimp did...)

So the old gimp did only start into the toolbox. (with a minimal menu, file, extra...)

Would be great to have that back, cos even on my desktop I mostly have that gimp toolbox somewhere at the side... and that empty window really annoys me.

If you're using gimp the window isn't empty and if you're not using gimp why have it running? Note that I'm not a gimp developer because it hasn't felt like time to tackle the no doubt steep learning curve, but I REALLY appreciate them. I also really love the new UI (can we still say new after all this time?) It used to be strange and scattered, and now with the menus in the image window (whether you've loaded an image into it or not), and it staying after you exit the last image things are simpler and clearer. It's a more usual paradigm to have the menus in the window you edit things in. I used to think that I wanted to be able to dock the tools and layers on the side of the image window, but now realize that I really don't. I want maximum area for my editing, and when I need a tool or want to select a layer mask makes it appear and then makes it go away so once again I have maximum area for editing:)

Just my 2 cents;)

Patrick
