2.6.X manual

There is an online version of the 2.6 manual in html form. Is there a way to download the whole shebang in one step or must I download the individual files one at a time?

There is an open source program, "Httrack" (cf.) which might be able to
download the entire manual, though I cannot comment on how successfully it would accomplish the task.

You might try "wget", wget -r -l 2 -p http:///1.html

see the man page for more comprehensive parameters.

note: works for linux, you didn't provide your operating system software....

You can download the latest snapshot (italian & english) from here:

http://gimp.linux.it/www/meta/gimp-manual.tar.gz

this version _HAS_ images and you can delete the italian version once installed.

2.6.X manual

It's on a Windows 2000 machine.

I downloaded and installed the user guide into: E:\GIMP\GIMP-2.0\share\gimp\2.0\help\en

Then I opened the Preferences dialog and looked at the Help System menu item. There is a choice to use the online help or a locally installed copy.

I select "Use a locally installed copy" but the dialog announces that "The user manual is not installed locally."

When I try to open the help system using either my default browser (FF2) or GIMP's help browser, I'm again told I don't have the help manual installed.

So I guess I don't have the manual in the right place.

I'm real close but don't have it working quite yet.

Hi Marco,

If I download and install the manual tarball, is there a way to make GIMP look at the local installed version instead of the online version????

Under Windows, Linux or Mac?

On Linux you just have to put it in:

/usr/share/gimp/2.0/help/NN/index.html

where NN is the language. Mine is:

/usr/share/gimp/2.0/help/it/index.html

I'd guess that you probably DO have the manual in the right place. For some reason, the interface between GIMP and the help manual and Windows is broken in 2.6. In November, 2008, I reported the same issue on this list, was told it was a known issue, and was to be fixed in the "next release". As this was 2.6.2, my assumption at the time was that "next release" meant 2.6.3, but as we are now to 2.6.6, I'm guessing instead that "next release" actually means no earlier than 2.8.x

2.6.X manual

Ken:

Upon further reflection it occurs to me that this may be an issue with the Windows installer for GIMP, which is not officially supported. The person who thoughtfully provides the windows installer, does not seem to include the help files in the installer, which would help resolve the issue.

My next working plan is to use a mirror utility to copy the on-line help to my local machine.

Thanks. I use Slackware Linux 12.2. Gimp 2.6.6 compiles OK after downloading and installing Babl and Gegl.
