"Cool glowing text" in 2.6.1

I'm running 2.6.1 because it came from Ubuntu's repos, and documentation seems to be non-existent for it. So I'm using 2.6.6 docs and tuts, and stumbling around menus looking for similar options. Until now Google has helped a bit, but I can't find "Selection from Alpha" anywhere. Insight?

I'll likely have trouble with other items in the same tutorial, so if anyone is farsighted enough I'd appreciate advance help as well.

Thanks!

Do you maybe mean, "Alpha to Selection"? It would be under Layer>Trasparency>Alpha to Selection. Or you can right click on the layer in the layers dialog and it will come up in that menu as well.

Image: Layer -> Transparency -> Alpha to Selection

The various sub-versions of 2.6 are only bug fixing versions, thus the documentation is the same.

I would add that I always enable backports in ubuntu in order to keep up-to-date with the latest releases of gimp [1]. They say on on the ubuntu site how enabling backports might make ubuntu less stable, but in my experience it tends to be the other way round.

Of course, 9.04's out now as well, which will included a more recent version of Gimp.

Thanks Elwin and Olivier; that was it. The meaning must have been reversed in translation from German to English.

Olivier, I'm pretty sure the menus have been moved around... I think the only case documented online (in a blog comment) regarded the Filters menu.

David, I don't know that option, but I have to reinstall anyway because my system is decaying... if I can just boot off my burned DVD. In case you have any ideas, here's the link for that: http://www.hardwareforums.com/booting-cd-25564/

Thanks!
