(OT?) Creating image effects

This is most likely off-topic, but this is the best bunch of people to ask...

I have been tasked with coding image effects (filters), such as spherize, and zigzag effects.

Pointers on where to start would be highly appreciated. Looking for algorithms, best practices etc...

Do a google search for comp.graphics.algorithms. That should have some pointers, though I don't know if they specifically cover spherize or zigzag.
