Smooth line for print

I'm trying to make a simple map that I can import to a MS Word document for print purposes and I'm having a couple of challenges.

When I make a straight line it is very jagged and the text looks pretty bad when I print it out on paper.

I can add the text after I import to Word if necessary but I would like to get the lines to look nice. Can someone tell me how to do this?

Also, since my printer prints at 600 dpi, I set the image properties to 600 dpi. Is that correct?
