corrupted menus in 2.6.5

I'm new to gimp, and have just started version 2.6.5 on a macbook OS10.4.11(tiger) after downloading X11. When I start working on an image all goes well. Progressively however the dropdown menus become garbage, showing me not the options but random bits of other parts of the screen. At the beginning only the horizontal menus are corrupted, but eventually so are the vertical ones and those accessed by right-clicking on the image. The secondary menus turn to garbage as well. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sounds like a bug in your X server. What X server are you using?
