What happens if you set the environment variable "LANG" to "C" and restart GIMP? When you install GIMP, what translations do you choose to install?

Hi,

Looking at the unicode indices, it appears that GIMP is running in english. But for some reason the font that is being used for the user interface does not seem to provide the glyphs needed to render this.

Did you change your system font or any other fonts? Did you change any libraries that are used for font rendering?

What version of GIMP are you using anyway and where did you get it from?

I was unable to view your image, so this comment may be entirely offbase; however, a GIMP user reported on GIMPtalk.com[1] having problems with the Alduin "visual style" when running GIMP 2.6.2 on Windows. I do not use Windows and am not sure how visual styles might apply to your problem (or whether they do), but perhaps you could try changing to see.

I can open Gimp... but instead of words in the dialog windows & boxes ive got small squares with numbers in them. Ive tried reinstalling gimp several times & even going back to a later version of gimp. But with the later versions i get an error saying...

Gimp - 2.4.exe Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point g_content_type_from_mime_type could not be located in the dynamic link library libgio-2.0-0.dll
I havent a clue what that means, can someone please help me? I am running windows but everything you said after that went completely over my head.

Up above you mention gimp 2.6 but this error references gimp 2.4

If I were attacking this problem I would make sure gimp is totally un-installed.

Then look for gtk and glib in add remove programs and un-install them (abiword and (i think) gaim use gtk so you may need to re-install those programs as well)

I don't think you will find a glib entry but I recently had a similar problem due to incompatable glib (on linux)so I thought I'd mention it

Reboot (I'm told that windows likes to do this :-)

Then I would go back to http://www.gimp.org/windows/
download the installer (link in 2nd paragraph) and try a fresh install.

Good luck

I looked at your image...while I'm not sure how to solve the problem, I think I know what it is.

It looks as if GIMP is trying to operate in a foreign language that's not installed on your computer. When I use Firefox (in Linux) to view Japanese or Korean websites, I see those same squares with numbers--they're replacing the foreign characters. But if I use Opera (in Windows) with those same sites, they render properly, because I have those foreign languages enabled in Windows.

I would do as others have already suggested, and make sure that the GIMP is completely uninstalled. Re-install it, and make sure that it's the English-language version.
