Calibrating monitors in Ubuntu

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 / 6400 and I've done all my work on its built-in monitor. Now that I've gotten an external 22" Asus monitor, all my colours are off. What is the proper way to calibrate a monitor? Is there a reference image that one should use for calibration? I am more interested in calibrating the external Asus against a known reference implementation than against the Dell's internal monitor. Thanks.

Is the most useful page I've read on calibration.......(Pretty sure I got this from this list a couple of years ago.)
