Hello list,

This is Akshay, a hobby photographer. I started using GIMP very recently. I know there is a lot to learn, hence i am here :) I am an automation engineer by profession.

Welcome, and you are right there is a lot to learn. May I suggest that you have a look at www.meetthegimp.org and follow the videos listed here. I did and learnt a lot of very useful things about Gimp for the amateur photographer.

meetthegimp.org is definately a good choice! if you're more into reading than watching - you can take a look at the tutorials on www.gimpusers.com.
