gimp's default screentones,brushes and palettes

could do a bit of refresh untill it gets to next stable. I'd say why not make gimp's site more inviting to artistic people, by adding a poll or comment feature,a place where people can write tutorials or speedpaints done by gimp (attaching images/embeding youtube) (see Open Canvas' website).. also ask artists who use gimp to submit things like palettes, brushes, skreentones ,and so on..or just add a link to gimp-files.org (which btw is growing nicely), make polls about which screentone, etc should be included in next gimp, which are the most favorable ones, and so on.. I think that such a thing will make people check gimp up more oftenly and its website too..

i would suggest this palette: http://gatogirl12345.deviantart.com/art/Copic-Colors-for-The-Gimp-86084821 its a copic markers palette with all the copic markers colors. You know how expensive these are? How much people love buying them exactly because of their colors? =P

also more dot-like dojinshi/manga/comic book screentones.. Gimp's brushes could use some new and nice ones. If all must be GPL, I am willing to remake one or two, just to make them avaiable in gimp as default. =)

It says "This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License"

This is definitely not good for distribution with free software.

Yes! Here is a Pack create by me, Daniel and organized by GIMP user Valerie (tested by various "GIMP artists" to):

http://filsd.deviantart.com/art/GIMP-possible-Defaut-set-92263636

Its licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 License
.
I can change the license if its not suitable for GIMP.

Thanks,

Hi

This was recently discussed [1] and everyone seems to agree that GIMP should ship with more/better default data files like brushes, but since there currently is no good way to organize them, this is postponed.

The GSoC 2008 project that is introducing support for tagging of data files like brushes looks very promising, so let's revisit this topic when the time is better, i.e. when we have a good taggins system in place so that the new data files can be organized.

Best regards, Martin Nordholts

I've just got a reply from the artist. She wrote me that she relicensed them under Share-Alike. This is what the license text says too now ( if you follow the link above)

Hi,
IANAL but:
The artist on deviantart may be ok now with redistributing the palette, but before this is shipped, some lawyer should have a look at it. While the colour data of a single colour is probably not copyrighted in most countries (The _use_ of certain colors in certain contexts may be protected, under trademark laws, for example. But that doesn't matter here, I think.), the distribution of databases may be seen as original work and thus protected. And if the databases are not gatogirl12345's invention, GIMP might run into trouble.

Just my 2¢,
Daniel

i believe that it should have get new stuff feature, the one that the new kde4 has. It simplifies the process of downloading and adding new screentones, brushes and so on ..Curently doing this with gimp is somewhat a pain in the arse. The user has to copy untared files to hidden directories,or set new directories in gimp, sometimes resize or convert files. There should be a faster way of doing those simpkle tasks and adding the get hot new stuff feature would definatelly be a big improvement and it will link gimp directly to its living community..
gimp-files.org?
