sharefonts dependancy?

sharefonts dependancy?

Hi,

gentoo devs have just realised sharefonts is incorrectly labelled public domain in thier package manager and is being installed without the user being aware of the licence. They intend removing it. http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=218288

One package that seems to use it is gimp.

on http://www.gimp.org/docs/userfaq.html it says

The base script-fu package makes extensive use of the freefont package, and at least one font (AlfredDrake) from the sharefont package.

This seems pretty marginal usage. Can anyone advise if removing sharefonts will break fu or any other parts of gimp?

TIA.

The freefonts and sharefonts packages disappeared from Ubuntu and Debian quite a while ago (years). Kind of a shame -- there were some nice fonts in those packages.

you should still be able to find them without counting on apt-get or whatever bunty uses.
A quick google finds this:
http://linux.maruhn.com/sec/sharefonts.html

you should find something there that fits. Probably an rpm . fonts dont need compiling so it's just a case of checking they unpack to the right place (and reading the shareware licence).

getting back to the point of the post , does gimp require this package to work correctly?

TIA.

As you could have easily found out yourself, there is no more script using fonts from the sharefonts package. There are some scripts using fonts from the freefonts package, but even that doesn't make it a dependency. fontconfig will happily substitute some other font if the requested font is missing.
