gray point correction

Hi,

I am trying to understand the process by which the TheGimp calculates the "corrected" RGB values for an image given the RGB values for a "presumably" gray group of pixels (selected using the gray point eyedropper). Can anyone point me to a text, link, or outline the algorithm?

Thanks.

Martin
