Is the project still running?
Hi, I was wondering if the GIMP project is still running. I saw that the development page had not been updated since 2013 and that the website has also not been updated in a while. If I is not, I would love to take over the project and breath some life into it. My plans are to re-design the website as well as update it continuously and to guide the development to rival the release cycles of Blender. I hope that I will be able to help this great project get back up and running.
Thanks,
John Roper

I think that Alex was a finding the question a little odd, as the project is quite active, has been releasing updates, and is very much alive and kicking... :)
If you're referring to the website itself, as opposed to the program, then there is movement there at the moment as well. We appreciate you reaching out to us, though! Perhaps you'd like to help with some aspect of the site as we move forward? I need some things ported over to markdown to use for the new infrastructure, freely-licensed artwork is always helpful, and failing any of that, donations will help the devs to travel, meet, and present about our progress...

In general, while contributions are more than just welcome, coming out of blue and trying to claim leadership of the project is not exactly the best way to make a good impression. Especially if one doesn't even look at what's going on in source code repository or ask about current development priorities. Personally, I would never work with/under such a leader.
Now, as Dustin already mentioned, work on the new website is well underway. If you are willing to help with that, personally I would be very grateful to you. But pretty please talk to us before rushing to conclusions.

Sorry I missed this. Who when and why decided for markdown? I really think that asciidoc or rest would be a better option IMHO...

John,
I'm deliberately replying on-list again in case you accidentally removed gimp-web@, especially since you do want Pat to read your emails :)
Development page has not been updated in a long time indeed, but it doesn't really mean much. We maintain the wiki which currently has information for new developers. We will have to think about porting the Development section of the website to the new instance.
Patrick David is the primary person in charge of the new website, he knows more than anyone else what kind of help he needs.

I think all active contributors to anything GIMP should make an effort to be there, otherwise it is really easy to miss out on stuff.

For a time, we had regular development update posts, done by Karine Delvare. This is something that could be picked up again, to communicate that and what is done to GIMP development.

I mentioned the WGO_Redesign page on the wiki ( http://wiki.gimp.org/index.php?title=WGO_Redesign), in this msg: http://www.mail-archive.com/gimp-web-list%40gnome.org/msg00191.html
I hadn't heard any feedback, so began working with what I had. It is not tied to markdown. We can still use restructured text or even html, but I outlined reasons why I felt a simple markup format can only help (as opposed to expecting contribs to write in pure (x)html markup).

John,
Pelican uses the Jinja temptations engine. I've taken a base, barebones framework from that, and modified both the markup and css of the templates to generate the site layout and presentation.
It should be mostly responsive to various screen resolutions already, requiring only minor tweaks to fix a few oddball things (hopefully). On Wed, Aug 19, 2015 at 5:37 PM John Roper wrote:

Yes I agree to avoid html, but think that markdown should be avoided. I conducted a little research for improving the KiCad documentation, see this:
https://github.com/ciampix/kicad-doc/tree/master/doc_alternatives
the result is that we decided to use asciidoc for the web also.
This is my 2 cents
