I'm quite to prepared to be called ungrateful even if I do appreciate any work put into this. But what I'd really like to see is someone going through the whole routine: list of requirements, functional spec, CMS/CMF estimation, wireframing, design, coding, delivery etc.

Admittedly, I should probably be the one to do the first half, I just never found the time/motivation.

Dustin, I'm not sure if it matters at all.

For an existing website, a new design that works needs an analysis, what users actually do, how they find information they need etc. Without that you can easily get am awesome beautiful design that simply won't work.

To the best of my knowledge, gimp.org has no advanced web analytics script installed, so whoever wants to do this seriously might need to fix that first.

No Google analytics or anything? Very odd. On Dec 8, 2014 6:37 AM, "Alexandre Prokoudine" < alexandre.prokoudine@gmail.com> wrote:

Hi guys,

I'm not sure that looks like a real design. I can suggest even better templates from themeforrest or wrapbootstrap. There are thousands of them. I think design of gimp.org is solid, consistent and doesn't require any changes.

We have the non-user-tracking parts of Google Webmaster Tools in place, at least for www.gimp.org.

Adding invasive tracking like e.g. Google Analytics feels unbecoming of a FLOSS project web site.

We should have access to the server logs, though.

Even if it's a self-hosted open source system like Piwik?

We should have access to the server logs, though.

For the outlined purpose it's of little to no use.

Website overhaul

@Alexandre, why not? You're right, list of specs, wireframing, etc. should be done. Also, Google Analytics could be very useful.

@Dustin no, plain HTML/CSS(actually I use Jekyll to build pages, but they're all static), I didn't even use any UI framework like Twitter Bootstrap.

@Philipp I don't think so, I had a hard time looking for this mailing list and for source code. The only thing changed in seven years( https://web.archive.org/web/20071231122551/http://www.gimp.org/) is only the banner and the "Make a donation" button. Lots of things have changed in these years, we now have HTML5 and CSS3, and responsive design is the standard now.

@Michael I understand, but the ultimate goal is to improve the website.

Website overhaul

What about the current website is lacking?

The question is a loaded one intended to start down the long, arduous path that Alexandre already mentioned, which is to approach the problem from a cohesive user standpoint, through requirements, design and delivery.

I too would like to tackle it, but currently am a bit busy with other things as well. I may take a stab at some point at some rudimentary analysis and throw it over the fence to discuss, but any serious discussion about changes to the site should probably be done in a focused and thoughtful way.
