Change Request: Redesign the "Color Balance" UI

I used "Color Balance" a lot recently. And i want to propose a redesign of the UI to make it more intuitive. I have made a quick mockup of that: http://files.spacefish.biz/gimp/new_color_correction_menu.png Maybe i got this wrong, but isn´t the "Color Balance" menu just a simple 3-Way Color Correction Panel?

What do you think about the idea?

http://i.imgur.com/PhaXziO.png would probably be a slightly more traditional rendering :)

I guess some people would like to retain numeric input, but that's just my gut feeling. For me 3-way would be preferable.

I would definitely want to keep the numbers. For one thing you're not going to be able to drag those dots-in-circles in real time, since it can take several minutes to redraw the screen for each change - unless the filter was modified to work on the preview image first, at least.

And yes, I have a reasonably recent, powerful computer, but I work with print-resolution images - 45 to 500 Megapixel digital cameras are not unheard of either.

In the meantime, just having a colour bar on each slider, or above it, in the existing dialogue, would greatly help colour balance and also colourize.

Not bad ;-)
Send it to the GIMP UI brainstorm team, see http://gimp-brainstorm.blogspot.de/

The tool could offer both methods so users can choose. Actually, Blender has two different methods: Lift/Gamma/Gain and Offset/Power/Slope (the second is the ASC-CDL standard exchange format for color grading).
If the 3-way UI and the current numeric inputs have a correspondence, users could change between modes without loosing the grading.

Boosting the color balance tool to add this new stuff sounds like a really cool GSoC project, especially now that making GIMP suitable for VFX work became one of the targets.

I like they way blender does it in the compositing node too, we could port that "Design" to the GIMP Dialog. I thought about the numeric input values too, maybe just add the colorwheels to the current dialog, and keep the sliders / numeric input. If someone changes the sliders the change is reflected on the colorwheels and vice versa.

But i think it could get ambigious if the radiobox selector for shadows, midtones, highlights is still present and the 3 color wheels aswell..

Does GIMP offer GSoC projects? Would this "small" task also be a GGSoC project?

Offer? :) We usually do participate at GSoC, if that's what you mean :)

I don't think it's a "small" task if the project involves turning the current color balance into a flexible and industry-grade tool. That would involve not only tweaking the UI but also making the output of the tool comply the ASC-CDL standard and storing and retrieving those presets.

When I suggested it as a possible GSoC target I was thinking about improving the tool to make it suitable for VFX work, not just changing the UI.

I suppose you mean this page and its trivial formula?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASC_CDL

If not already implemented, doing the math as gegl op looks most trivial to me, I guess not more than one day if everything goes wrong.

Then there is a settings object for GIMP, featuring the three mentioned slope, offset and power, can happen in half a day.

The rest is the UI, everything else (loading, saving, whatnot) is handled generically by GIMP.

I don't think this is the size of a GSoC project, unless it includes turning the *entire* "Color" menu into a state-of- the art thing, which would mean the above work a couple of times.
