Rethinking mailing list rules

Hi,

because of some neverending discussions on the mailing lists in the last time schumaml and I considered rethinking the mailing list etiquette rules. Thereto I searched the web for existing mailing list rules and found quite a lot. Because I see us as a community I decided to make a catalog of them as a groundwork for a discussion. You find it at
http://wiki.gimp.org/index.php/Mindstorm:_Rework_of_mailing_list_rules Please have a look at it and tell your opinion on it here. The reworked selection will become the new rules.

Secondly I think it's useful to publish these rules on new mailing list subscriptions and regularly.

Best regards,

grafxuser

Very good and welcomed. If observed/enforced, list traffic will be much more informative and helpful.

Secondly I think it's useful to publish these rules on new mailing list subscriptions and regularly.

Required reading for subscribing and monthly list reminders....

tks for your efforts.

Agree about posting list rules, and this is a really good start but I think it needs to be MUCH shorter or people won't read them.

I'd suggest try to get down to 6 or 7 short statements with links to more detail where it'd be useful.

List only the absolutes, and link to guidelines separately.

Well, maybe something really short like this:

List posting Guidelines

1. stay on topic; people are busy 2. do not attack other people
3. check bugzilla [1] before reporting problems 4. GIMP is not PhotoShop; don't assume people know other software 5. messages are to be in English and in plain text (not HTML). 6. see [2] for how to report problems 7. Thank you for being part of the GIMP commmunity.

Where 1 and 2 are links into the wiki, and also perhaps to http://www.catb.org/esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

And then linking to a longer page like the wiki would be fine.

Liam

+1 - add a link to the wiki page at the top, as the entire list is worthwhile for those who like detailed guidance.

Does "no HTML" imply no smileys?:-)

Rethinking mailing list rules

Hi,

thank you all for your positive reactions and helpful comments.

I reworked the whole list and made a short version with four easy to remember items and separate more detailed explanations out of it.

You find it at http://wiki.gimp.org/index.php/Mindstorm:_Rework_of_mailing_list_rules. I also linked to it from the wiki main page (in the 'Hot topics' section).

Your comments are welcome again.

Best regards,

grafxuser

Much better, thank you for your hard work!

Minor note, "Write Readable" should probably be "Write Readably".

Thanks.

Can we add a sentence about mailing list digests? Sometimes people just reply to the digest mails, yielding unreadable subjects and broken threads...

Thanks,
Simon

Thank you, Liam and Simon, for your hints. I've taken them up and edited section 4.
