Subject: [Gimp-developer] Possible issue regarding the Paint Tools

Hello.

As regards to GIMP 2.8, in the Tool Options dialog shared by all the Paint Tools, there seems to be an oddity affecting the Size widget. Precisely, the relevant value is not updated when changing the active brush through the Brushes dialog, whereas it is supposed to automatically match the native size of the currently selected brush instead.
In particular, as default setting and accordingly at the beginning of each GIMP session, the size value is always set to 20.00, no matter what is the specific brush chosen as the default, so the only way to obtain the correct size consists in clicking the Reset button placed alongside the slider every time you pick a diverse brush. Does this behavior have to be considered a bug or, on the contrary, has it been implemented as a new feature on purpose?

It is true that each brush has a default size associated with it, and also true that the size you specify in your Tool Options completely overrides this. This way you get a predictable brush size when you want to paint (as opposed to 2.6's "Brush Scalar" method), although unlike 2.6 when you are dealing with specialized brushes you have little or no way of knowing in advance what that brush's default size is, and it is a slight handicap if you really do WANT brushes of different sizes available at a click.

Perhaps there should be a user selectable preference that when you select a brush from the dialog, the current tool's brush size is reset to that brush's default. Or, alternately, include it as part of the tool options dock itself, for example a checkbox that says "(use default)" or similar, or maybe a button that just reverts the current tool size to the brush's default.

Actually, I think that last one is the best option. When adjusting between similar brushes (e.g. Hardness 50 -> Hardness 75) you probably want the size to remain constant, but the ability to reset the size to a brush's default at any time you need to would be a definite plus.

That is the new (GIMP 2.8) default behaviour that irritates Gino. IMHO would be great to let the user choose its preference, use one general size default for all the tools or default to the tool default size. An option in the preference or in the tool options should be created on purpouse.
