Need clarifications about "gimp-drawable-merge-shadow"

Hi.

May anyone explain me how exactly the procedure called "gimp-drawable-merge-shadow" works and if there is some useful purpose for which it can be employed within the Script-Fu scripts?

Any examples to recommend?
