UPDATING VERSION

I am currently using GIMP 2.4.7, but I see that the current version is 2.6.11.

How do I go about updating my version of GIMP? Should I UNINSTALL the previous version first and then install the newer version, or will installing the newer version simply overwrite the previous version if I don't uninstall it first?
