It's an experiment in minimalism. How does the blank page make you _feel_?

Yes, it's down for a while already. I can't host this service any longer and already offered a backup on IRC for anyone who wants to take over. So far no one approached me asking for the data.

I have over a gig of free space on my virtual server. What versions of PHP/MySQL are required?

I should have a bit of free capacity on my virtual server aswell. since it looked to be a very simple mediawiki, it shoudnt require much. Downgrading the database if dump is from a newer version can be a bit of a pain tho.

The current setup uses PostgreSQL 8.1.8 and MediaWiki 1.9.3. The PHP version on this server was recently upgraded from 5.2.11 to 5.3.1. Since this update the gui.gimp.org wiki is down, because the MediaWiki installation appears to be incompatible with this newer version of PHP.
If you are still interested in taking over, and if Peter agrees, I can make the database dump and a backup of the mediawiki installation with all uploaded images etc. available.

The server has (much) older versions of the software in question, but I was going to request an upgrade one of these days anyway, so I'll speak to hosting company and let you know.

so that is what happened...

yes, I do agree to getting gui.gimp.org (as-is, and under that address) running again a.s.a.p.

Oh well, the versions don't much badly and the current setup doesn't allow custom upgrade of software. We're thinking about moving to VDS anyway, and that might solve it. How large was the monthly traffic for gui.gimp.org?

Well, actually what happened is that I told you several months ago that I can't keep the site running for much longer. I tried to keep it up and running nevertheless, fixing things and restarting the server when necessary. But this time the effort to bring it up again is just too much for me. I am sorry.

So far no-one has approached me asking for the tarball that I prepared. Is there really no-one out there who's willing and capable to host this simple Wiki setup?

Like you :-) I'm too busy right now, although I can provide server space. I'm not willing to host a wiki unless there are active anti-spam measures in place (same as for blogs) but otherwise it's fine.

I think that wiki was not open for registration and nobody but Peter could edit it.

close.
There are (I think) 4 accounts up to now, 3 for UI team members and an administrator (Sven up to now).
a new account is added (by admin) only when the admin and I agree.
but maybe Liam had more sneaky modes of spam in mind.

As pointed out, spam shouldn't be a problem since the Wiki has a closed (and small) group of users and is not publicly editable.
I'd prefer to have the Wiki hosted by someone who has been sticking around the GIMP project for a while. Someone who we all know as thrust-worthy. Please pick one of the volunteers and let me know who should receive the URL of the backup.

I would be happy if Liam could host it. he seems to have the most direct control over his server.
I do find it important that the DNS is also updated then. there is loads of linkage to gui.gimp.org and deep into the wiki:

No, that would be fine.
Someone ran a blog on my system that allowed open comments, and quickly got up to over 40,000 spam comments on each posting...

I can try to install mediawiki this week (don't expect a problem, the server is running centos linux & it's packaged) and then I'll ask Sven for the backups.
I'm a bit flat-out-busy this week, but sometimes that's the best time to get things done!

I got the backups from Sven and tried restoring them at Easter, using the version of mediawiki that was running before, and ran into problems restoring the SQL dump, but at that point I'd already spent a day on it. I do have the wiki running, but it doesn't see the data.
I hope to have another day for it next weekend. Anyone with postgresql and mediawiki experience is welcome to contact me to help it go faster!
