English-Localised lookup table for function names?

English-Localised lookup table for function names?

Hi,
I have an suggestion.

Translated menu-entries are given, for good recognition by users, either descriptive names or well known names. Though almost tutorials are written in English on the web, therefore some users may want to know also the English name of these functions. I found a Japanese person who insist at his weblog that he set the locale for running GIMP as English on purpose.

Can the GIMP help contain a lookup table for to search GIMP functions by English name?

I know these names are defined at message section than the manual documentation, but reference pages or lookup tables may be our buisiness.

Best regards,

English-Localised lookup table for function names?

Hi,

In previous versions of gimp-help, there was such a table which was called "dictionary", giving the corresponding english name for each french command and option. It could have been possible to adapt it to other languages.

It disapeared when migrating from xml to po.

Now, with English as the reference language, I don't see how to rebuild it :-(. Is it possible to have a po file independant from English? May be images of the table?

Similar refrence system would be also useful. We can add English words to each corresponding pages, so that user can see them by pressing F1. Or the message translators may append a English fucntion name on its tooltip of the menu entry, then user could see it more easily.

Now, with English as the reference language, I don't see how to rebuild it :-(. Is it possible to have a po file independant from English? May be images of the table?

Just adding

English name

would make the table which I want, if xml2po is sensitive to its trailing white space, so that this English word can maintain. Can the Docbook index build system works twice? If it can do, the page of lookup table will be separated from the general index page.

Of cource, there may be some automated system that can do it more efficiently.

You could probably build such a dictionary using the gimp message catalogs. The gimp message catalogs contain all menu entries and their translations.

Users frequently ask questions or send bug reports using the original menu names because they don't know the English terms. What I usually do then is to look up the terms in the po files that are located in the GIMP source.

For GIMP 2.8 we plan to add the possibility to easily change the language that GIMP uses from the Preferences Dialog. I am afraid though that changing this setting will require a restart.

OK, but this new feature must not prevent us from having both 'en' and localized GIMP at the same time on our screen, as now with the "LANGUAGE=xx gimp-2.6 -n" command. This is indispensable for me.
