As a try, in my local copy of the repo, I've added this:
$ svn diff src/appendix/fdl.xml
Index: src/appendix/fdl.xml

but po/it/appendix.po is _not_ updated. The strange thing is that I now see the added para in the html output and I'm wondering how it works...

I found this way to handling this text.
In this way the english text make sense for the en version and yet the translators, looking at the notes, can create a coherent text for the translations.
These two paras, following the license directive as published by the FSF, must appear on every translated version of the licence.
Please feedback. If we convey on this, I'll commit this patch.

Hi Marco,
your text looks good to me (nice idea with the two paras).
Suggestions:
1) In the po files you can't see the "para tags", so you should consider
replacing "para tags" with e.g. "msgid".
2) We chould add a link to the English GPL, e.g.
... distribution terms for software that uses the GNU FDL -
only the original English text of
the GNU FDL does that.
3) " -language-" is a bit discrete, maybe better ""?

ok good point, done.

right, done.
I've removed the tags. The text is way too large to fit in such a narrow place and make the paragraphs soooo long. Maybe it could be handled better with your 2nd solution with .css files that you posted some days ago.
In the meantime if it could go I'll commit these changes. Chosmetic changes are not so important and could be done without ml peer review, IMHO.

The epigraph layout is defined in gimp-help-screen.css, starting with
.epigraph {
padding-left: 55%;
so you can always override this (thus combining both solutions) with
.appendix .epigraph {
... /* what ever */
(of course this would affect other epigraphs in appendix files as well).
You may also try other tags, e.g. legalnotice or abstract...

Yes, good idea.

That could be a sub-optimal solution...

You _definitely_ know these things better than me.
I know, I must thank you for giving me a reason to study better the inner workings of the GIMP manual structure, but I'm afraid to do too much mistakes on it and noise on this list...
I'll do some experiments and I'll post here the diffs before commiting anyway.
Really thanks for your patience...

Done.
