IPTC & EXIF Information

I have been watching and searching for a while but have not found much so I decided to ask.

Is IPTC and EXIF support on the road map for GIMP in the near future?

It looks like that information is currently stripped out of an image if the image is edited in GIMP.

I would be nice if GIMP supported keeping the IPTC and EXIF information along with viewing it.

It would be absolutely great if GIMP supported Editing the IPTC info.

I have had to cut down my use on GIMP if I suspect the image has IPTC data. Something that I am seeing more am more photographers use. Currently i check the image with another program like IrfanView or something else for IPTC data before choosing to use GIMP.

I know the developers are busy, but was wondering if that was on the plans.

I would love to offer my coding services, but I have not done any good coding in years and I suspect you would not want anything I even attempted to do :)

I do want to thank the developers for all the hard work they have put into such a great product.

thanks

Alan

With regard to exif data, there is an option in the jpeg save as dialog to retain or strip out the exif data

Out of curiousity I just converted a jpg with exif to png then ran exiftool against it and got out some of the exif data, so I am not sure your "strip out exif data" is a correct statement

AFAIK, exif support has been in gimp for years. IPTC is something new, though I think exiftool handles it

Logo scripts crash gimp 2.7

I am not sure if report to bugzilla because is about Gimp 2.7, on windows XP

Each of the script in File/Create/Logos crash Gimp

More exactly pop out Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime error

"Runtime error! Program C:\Program Files\Gimp-2.7\bin\gimp-2.7.exe This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in a unusual way. Please contact...etc"

and when pressing OK gimp abort immediately This happen with all Logos scripts i try till now .

If you are running GIMP 2.7 on Windows I assume you have built GIMP yourself? Could you provide a stack trace of the crash then?

Thanks, - Martin

Nevermind, I just noticed there's a build of GIMP 2.7 from Jernej.

Can you reproduce this problem on Linux? If yes, what is the exact step-by-step? If no, then I can't help (without a major effort)

And there are more crashes as I was told. E.g. simply clicking with new text tool on canvas.

There have been people working on this, but that effort was never finished and as far as I know no one is actively working on the metadata framework at the moment. Of course we would love to see this work being continued.

IPTC & EXIF Information

Owen,

I saw that IPTC data got stripped out and thought that it was the same for EXIF. It does seem that GIMP should allow one to view this information.

I could see additional tabs/buttons under View -> Image Properties that would show the EXIF info along with showing and editing the IPTC data.

I had have not used ExifTool before, it is nice but for adding different comments to different images as part of IPTC data etc I think something integrated into GIMP would be much better along the lines of IrfanView.

thanks for the response.

Confirming this and the File-Create-Logos crashes.

I clicked the "will not bug developers" box too :-) Is there any way that Jernej could provide a debug-enabled exe for GIMP 2.7 win32 or do attempts to report bugs just get in the way of the "real" work being done by those competent to deal with them?
