Help

Hi,

I wish to use GIMP. I have downloaded it. I have run the setup program. I have a problem as a result.

Some more background information first. I am British. I live in Switzerland. My computer was purchased in Switzerland. The OS offered does not have an English option, so I struggle with the German.

Here is my problem.

I do NOT WANT GIMP TO TALK TO ME IN GERMAN. Please tell me how to get it switched into English.

And I'm not impressed that it has taken me so long to navigate through the different screens and options to just throw a question out into mid-air, not knowing what will happen to it.

Screams of frustration.

Phil

Ok.

Easy way if you will never need the other languages - uninstall gimp, then install again but choose to customize your install. Then remove check box from the Translations. Voila. Alternatives are, find and delete the localizations from your Program files/Gimp (not exact location, medium level task) folder or teaching your windows to set your LANGUAGE env variable(advanced level task).

And I'm not impressed that it has taken me so long to navigate through the different screens and options to just throw a question out into mid-air, not knowing what will happen to it.

You get answered.

Screams of frustration.

Perhaps you should try Paint.NET instead? Or Picasa? No point getting frustrated over software.

Here is my problem: I don't like being shouted at. The very first reaction is to not reply and just delete this mail.

Please learn some basic manners.

And I'm not impressed that it has taken me so long to navigate through the different screens and options to just throw a question out into mid-air, not knowing what will happen to it.

I'm not impressed to see a mail to developers list which actually is supposed to be written to users list or, rather, not be written at all, because Google already has the answer you need.

http://www.nabble.com/switch-interface-language--td19812101.html

And the easiest way is just to delete translation file inside C:\Program Files\GIMP\.

I do believe that GIMP for Windows is also shipped with a tiny standalone utility for switching languages.

Also, it's quite strange that you cannot configure your Windows system (it is Windows system, is it? - see, you didn't even tell us) to use English. This is fairly easy to do.

Screams of frustration.

So you are not smart enough to go to the GIMP user manual at http://docs.gimp.org/ and to enter the term "Language" into the Search box? Instead you decided to yell at the developers. I think you should better start to pay for your software. Please stop to use Free Software, thank you.

Help

Dear Sven,

thank you so much for your answer.

I am not yelling at developers, I am merely asking for help in a sea of misunderstanding. The entire note I sent was supposed to be a gently humorous way of attracting some attention as I was drowning.

Nowhere whatsoever on the web sites that I discovered does it actually help me find the right place to ask.

The only possible answer that I found was using the "Contact Us" connection.

Following that, I had to choose a path with insufficient information as to which would be the correct path to choose. For a beginner to find their way through these reefs and whirlpools is bewildering in the extreme. So I had, It appeared, to register in some group or other, just to ask a basic question. How do I, without insider knowledge, decide upon the best course of action.

So I chose one and sent a covering note to say that I was uncertain as to which path to choose and would be grateful for some navigational help.

I was totally unaware that I would receive such unfriendly and insulting replies from people, some of whom seem, at first glance, to live in an ivory tower. So I trod on some toes it seems, but with no intention of so doing, and with little or no help to guide me. I have ignored the first 7, yes that is SEVEN, insulting eMails that I have received, in one of which, the author suggested I find better manners, whilst then proceding to insult me again. Double-standards appear to exist in these rarified strati.

Personally, I can take the insults you and others have dished out, but I do not understand the reference to "yelling". I have not yelled at anyone, I have merely highlighted a part of my mesasge as my eMail program does not allow any underlines, colour, italivcs or anything like that.

Perhaps, if you have the time, you would be able to discuss this with me personally without any need for insults.

And no, I was not "smart enough" to go to such a site, as I was simply unaware that it existed. It is very kind of you to point out the existence of that resource, which I will now be able to access.

So I will remember the next time I see a drowning man, to make sure that I insult him from the safety of the river bank as I moan about his manners to all and sundry.

Yours most enlightenedly,

Phil Gooda.

Hi Phil

The website is as good as unmaintained and we would love to see someone improving it, feel free to be the one.

Even if your intention was not to yell in you mail that is how caps are interpreted and the replies you got was based on that. The worst thing you can do now is taking the replies personal. They are not targeting you as a person but they way you expressed yourself in your mail.

Just pay some extra attention to how you express yourself in your next gimp-developer thread and everything will be just fine.

Best regards, Martin Nordholts

Dear Sven,

If you're not used to the world of free software, there are few things you have to get used to. The first is that every single line of code, the testing of every single line of code, every bit of documentation, all the web-site maintenance, etc., etc., is done on a volunteer basis by people who, in addition to all the work they put into the GIMP, have real-life demands on their time, such as professions that pay their bills. Those who maintain the GIMP are under absolutely no obligation to do so, and there's no "GIMP Ltd." or some such that owes its existence to the sale of copies of the GIMP.

So, be nice to these people. Aside from the satisfaction of creating a fabulous piece of software, it's the only thanks they get.

BTW, emphasis is customarily suggested in these lists by enclosing material to be emphasised/ in forward slashes.

Yes, you did. The use of capital letters in emails is commonly considered to be an expression of shouting. Perhaps you should make yourself familiar with the most basic rules of communication on the internet.

Nowhere whatsoever on the web sites that I discovered does it actually help me find the right place to ask.

Oh, come on. There are links to the various GIMP user forums, the gimp-user mailing-list and there are prominent links to the user manual where your question is answered as well. If you think that this is not sufficient, we will be happy to receive your contributions for improving the web-site. It's basically unmaintained, so any help is appreciated.
