Font are small of tool-box in gimp 2.5.4

Hello, all

today I check gimp 2.5.4. and I found an installer for win32. it's so great!! thanks Jernej Simon?i?.
But something is awkward. It's that texts on tool-box and docks are small. In gimp 2.5.1 on Ubuntu, it's not. it looks good like this http://gimp.kr/download/file.php?id=443&mode=view

But in gimp 2.5.4 on Windows, it looks like this http://lh5.ggpht.com/like.a.dust/SNEPC1OYm6I/AAAAAAAAAOo/E14_J0eMHWc/gimp-2.5.4_win32_korean_font.png

Can you find the difference? I'm not sure, it's only my problem or gimp's bug. Humm.. I ran gimp with English, it has also small size font. If the language is english, it doesn't look bad. but in case of korean, it looks so bad.

Would you consider to change the font size of tool-box and docks?

Regards,

Choi, JiHui

I'm sorry. It's the problem of Windows fonts. I just finished to compile on Ubuntu. and gimp 2.4.5 on ubuntu looks good.

but I still want you, developers, to consider to change the font size.

This behavior is intentional.

Font are small of tool-box in gimp 2.5.4

Hi, Sven

Now I know. But in some environments, it's not convenient. If your system supports cleartype fonts, it may be good, but if not and you use non-english, it'll be very bad. I think this matter is a big problem enough to give up to use GIMP.

In my case, I'm used to GIMP UI, and I love GIMP. but I think I'll not like and will not use GIMP 2.6.x, because of just the font size. -_-;

so.. I hope you consider once more, please. :)

Hi,

It's impossible to please everybody, and fonts antialiasing is mainstream these days, working fine on most systems.

Makes me wonder what system you have.

P.S. By the way, there is no such thing as cleartype fonts ;-)

Hi,

Font antialiasing is not sane in some circumstances -- it simply blurs the glyphs in these cases. For example, complex characters as shown in Choi's screenshot. if there is SIGNIFICANT detail in antialiasing, then the font is too small. if there is NOT significant detail in antialiasing, the font should also look ok without antialiasing.

I would also argue that turning off antialiasing makes virtually everything more readable, even when the glyphs are simple.

Anyway!

The appropriate solution to this may be to package a simple alternate theme which makes the offending fonts larger, and install this theme if the language might require it (eg Japanese, Chinese, Korean)

* app/widgets/gimpdock.c: made the font scale factor for the docks configurable in gtkrc.

* themes/Default/gtkrc * themes/Small/gtkrc: for documentation purposes, added the default value for GimpDock::font-scale here. Changed all style property names to use the canonical names.

We all love when grumpy Sven says NO! at first, but later he introduces silently a patch.
:-)

Now seriously: That's a great option. Too big fonts were a problem for us who use western characters, because they used a lot of screen space and now the more compact dialogs look much better. But that seems to be a problem for systems with eastern characters. So this patch will indeed make everyone happy.
Thank you Sven!

I use Windows XP pro SP2 korean version. and the default korean font of XP is gulim. but this font doesn't support cleartype or antialiasing. so many korean people(or some whose the problem which we have) can't be comfortable.

It doesn't work (using ubuntu intrepid).

Changing the GimpDock::font-scale entry has no effect whatsoever on the appearance of the fonts.

Yet another pointless and annoying UI change. Please put it back the way it used to be, it wasn't a problem until you messed about with it.

Works for me when I put this:

style "gimp-default-style" {
GimpDock::font-scale = 2.8333 }

in ~/.gimp-2.7/gtkrc. Are you sure you had the right syntax in your gtkrc?

It works just fine for me and for everyone else.

If your mail wasn't so rude, I might even try to find out why it doesn't work for you. But why should I even talk to you? You have managed to look up the change in the ChangeLog, you can revert it in your copy of the source code if that makes you feel better.
