I would like to write a GAP user manual

This discussion is connected to the gimp-docs-list.gnome.org mailing list which is provided by the GIMP developers and not related to gimpusers.com.

This is a read-only list on gimpusers.com so this discussion thread is read-only, too.

I would like to write a GAP user manual

Hi There

I was hoping to write the Gimp GAP manual. Unfortunately I have found myself in a bit of a "catch-22".

I do not know the GAP side that well. I was hoping the developers would tutor me and I could write everything in a manual. I have volunteered hosting space for the project too. I have used Gimp for about 3 years now. I have spent many hours learning it, yet I am still consistently finding new features and new things that can be done with those features.

I am sure that GAP will provide many pleasant surprises for a long time to come too.

I can only program in Python but I took a peak at the GAP source code. It must have taken a long time to do all that work.

Having said that, there is very little documentation. It seems like such a shame that so much hard work has gone into it but it remains difficult to get started with(at least for me) due to the lack of documentation.

I am new to the Gimp mailing lists, please don't flame me but how do manuals(or sections) get written without assistance from the coders?

I want to help, please let me know how.

-Patrick

Hi Everyone

This is my first post here. My programming skills are still a little weak but I was hoping I could contribute by helping to write the Gimp GAP user manual. With a 1 1/2 year old child and a 1 1/2 year old business I don't have too much time. Things will go slow. I can however provide hosting space and indeed a dedicated website for the project.

If the GAP developers/users can help to tutor me I can post my work online. I should also be able to do so in a Wiki format so others can correct my mistakes or clarify ambiguous statements.

Please feedback as to whether or not this is a good idea, and if it is, any comments on the best way to achieve this.

Please contact the gimp-manual team. Perhaps it could be a good idea to just add a section on the online manual (that could have the side effect to enable the much useful "F1" key contest open help browser).

bye

I published a tutorial for GAP at http://www.gimptalk.com/forum/topic/Gap-For-Animated-Gif-9937-1.html

There are other tutorials for the GAP there also, and mine lists several other resources for the GAP on the web. Feel free to contact me directly for any questions you may have.
