Cannot paint on transparent layer?

When I create a new transparent layer I can't seem to paint on it with the Paintbrush.
When filling the layer with color (fill tool), now I am able to use the Paintbrush.
Do I have to do something after creating a new transparent layer to be able to Paint on the transparency with the paint brush?
Thanks,
Kalle

Please look in the "layer, channels and paths"dock, layer section. At the right of the "Mode" dropdown widget, there is a "checkbox" next to a checkeboard icon. The tooltip says "keep transparency". When it is check, paintbrush, pen or fill tools cannot paint on parts of the layer that are transparent. If you uncheck the box, all tools can paint everywhere on the layer.

Best regards,

Olivier.

Check the setting for "Keep transparency" (the small check box in the layer dialog next to the "Mode" dropdown).

If it is set to keep transparency, you can't paint on transparent areas.

I have the same problem.
I have the "keep transparency" checked, and I just cannot figure out why I can't seem to keep my painting on the layer. There are only two layers so there I am not having a problem keeping up with which layer to stay on! haha. I am getting frustrated through.

You do realise that this post is from 2005.

Nothing has changed. In the layer dialog, if the alpha lock is **on** , sometimes not so easy to see in Windows Gimp, you can not paint on transparency.

Click on the icon to toggle on-off. see: attachment and

https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-dialogs-structure.html

which says

Lock You have two possibilities:

Lock pixels: when this option is checked, you can't modify layer pixels. This may be necessary to protect them from unwanted changes.

Lock alpha channel: if you check this option the transparent areas of the layer will be kept, even if you have checked the Fill transparent areas option for the Bucket fill tool.
