Where can I download the help package for GIMP 2.8? I checked the gimp.org, but it only offers online help file, I do not see anyway to download the help package.

*Danger* Installing Service Pack 3 puts your XP computer deeper in the grasp of the Microsoft evil empire. Please, whoever can build Gimp 2.8 for windows, please don't require that we recklessly force SP3 on our otherwise stable machines.

I have strange issue. I installed GIMP 2.8 on windows XP and when I tried to open any other format of image i.e. jpeg, png etc. except xcf. It fails saying "unknown file"
Thanks for the additional info devvv; I had no idea they were only releasing even subs which now makes sense why 2.8.1 has yet to be released but folks were compile 2.8.1 from git. Look forward to the 2.8.2 release then. I know many issues got fixed including gimprc which I'm more looking forward to the fix. :)
2.8.2 will be out very soon! There are no odd sub-numbered versions anymore (so don't be confused if you think you missed 2.8.1) Even numberes are now considered "stable" versions (also in the micro numbers). Odd micro numbers are not going to be released and they are work-in-progress versions (even in the stable branch).
Does anyone here know when they are going to update 2.8 to 2.8.1? Way overdue if you ask my opinion. They've already patched the jpeg preview size bug and many more but only those that know how to compile their own version of GIMP right now can benifit and I'm on Windows. Don't want to mess my current environment for GIMP otherwise, I would more then be tempted to install Partha's build (64-bit) since he's already emplemented the fixes. Anyway, just wondering and hoping it comes out soon. :)

For the first try, do not delete anything, but disable the color managed display in the color management settings:
If this works, then we'll know that it is these settings - and nothing else - that cause the problem.
P.S. please do not delete the profile directory (.gimp-2.8, .gimp-2.6) unless you have exhausted other options (see above, for example). Actually, never delete it, but rename it and keep it for reference - if there is indeed a bug somewhere, then deleting will deprive us of ever finding out which option was the culprit.
Delete (moving or renaming may be a better option) the folder at C:\users\(your username)\.gimp-2.6. As I said earlier it worked for me, but not if I was using an embedded colour profile.

i ran into the brush lag as well on my xp3 install. worked fine in linux. i deleted my old config settings and made new ones... problem solved.

Thanks for that but I had deleted the 2.6 and 2.8 config folders and re-installed before making my previous comment about brush lag etc. The only way I could get it to work reasonably was by disabling the embedded colour profile. Not really an option for me.
This was on a reasonably quick modern machine incidentally with 4Gig of ram running Win7 64 bit.

For the people noticing brush lag etc, you may have the same problem I had when upgrading from 2.6 to the 2.8RC -- I solved it by uninstalling 2.8RC and deleting the 2.6 and 2.8 config folders and reinstalled 2.8. Brush lag etc were gone. I suspect 2.8 tries to import settings from the 2.6 folder ( I found a file I created during the 2.6 install in the 2.8 config folder ) and that screws up the 2.8 config.

Further to my message of 19 hours ago, that error I reported was happening on my XP SP3 installation at work. On my home computer, Windows 7, I don't get the error at all. Go figure.
I'm wondering if there's an official place somewhere where we can submit bugs. I have one:
- After installing Gimp 2.8 all my .xcf files where white as in Windows could not associate Gimp with them. Upon telling Windows to use Gimp to run them, only the first xcf file I tried changed into the Gimp (Wilber) icon. All the rest of them remain a white sheet. They do open in Windows now however. But still, the icons don't work.

Help
I can not install Gimp2.8 in XP with service pack 2. Why?
After downloading and installing on XP service pack 3 i found a message saying plugin-browser.exe-Entry point not found and the procedure entry point gzdirect could not be located in the dynamic link library zlib1.dll. What does it mean?

Hi,
2.8 is great. One problem though is that whenever I start up GIMP, I get this error during the splash screen (near the end):
---------------------------
ani.exe - Entry Point Not Found
---------------------------
The procedure entry point gimp_drawable_get_thumbnail could not be located in the dynamic link library libgimpui-2.0-0.dll.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------
After the error GIMP finishes loading and is usable though I fear that the lack of this entry point will cause errors when I use a feature that depends on it.
Bad brush lag for me, and image breaking up when panning around image. Zoom notchy. If I disable embedded colour profiles then it's better, but still not as good a 2.6.12. I need the embedded profile so disabling them isn't really an option.
I appreciate the work that's gone into this by the developers, but from a practical POV this release appears to me to be more or less unusable.
as for plugins: some may not be backwards compatible. some hoewever still work (like wavelet denoise or gmic for example). the plugin makers need to update their plugin accordingly.

@devvv
i mean, that the brush lags behind my cursor. For example if I try to draw a circle, i end up drawing a triangle. Also the preview when using the curves tool updates very slowly for example.
I figured out, that problem is gone if I disable color managment but I hope that has not to be the final solution to solve this.
The new 2.8 build for windows requires the processor supports SSE to install. Is this an oversite in the build process of are the developers abandoning older hardware?
Brush lag is still one of the major complaints onedot. Gets worse with larger rez images too (or larger brush size). I was hoping this would get addressed before the official build; hope it will by the next dot version (i.e. 2.8.1). :)

still my same problem from 2.8 RC1, why does the image stutter graphically whenever I move it using a mouse? I didn't experience this on 2.6.12.
Posted already, but will here too since this is the apparent new thread. Only thing that appears to have gotten fixed is the tif bug. The jpeg preview size while saving the file is still there. gimprc still can't deal with both pspi and user filter paths concurrently either (have to have PSPI, so, I'll continue to go through the fiasco of pointing to my guf directory every time I use the user filter). Oh well; just in a complaining mood right now. :)
